West Virginia is a state in the eastern United States, one of the so-called South Atlantic States (the only state in this group, which has no outlet to the Atlantic Ocean). The population in 2013 was 1,854,374 people (38-th place in the United States). The capital and largest city - Charleston. Other major cities - Huntington, Morgantown and Wheeling.

The area of the state is 62,745 square km (41 th place among the states). In the north, West Virginia is bordered by Pennsylvania, on the east by Maryland and Virginia, west to Kentucky and Ohio. The territory of West Virginia is located in the Appalachian system (highest point - Mount Spruce Knob). Appalachian Plateau covers about 60% of the state area, and generally mountainous terrain prevails here.

The largest rivers - Canova, Potomac River, Monongahela River and the New River. About 80% of the state is covered by forests. The climate is continental, moderately humid, frequent floods.

In the state there are significant reserves of coal, natural gas, oil, salt and other minerals.
